50,000 believers in the Greatness of Allah praying for the greater good of all people.

OUR TIME HAS COME

Hello Cupcake!

Velvet Elvis, Hello Cupcake

Des cupcakes au pays des cupcakes! Enfin.

Root beer float cupcake

Hello Cupcake: 1361 Connecticut Avenue, NW. Washington, DC 20036. Metro: Dupont Circle (red line). Tel: 202.861.2253. web: www.hellocupcakeonline.com Open Mon-Fri 10-7, Sat 10-9

Teacher gets jail time for corrupting minor

By Carl Hessler Jr.                                           Trial Lawyers

NORRISTOWN — A former Phoenixville charter school teacher has been sent to prison for having an improper intimate relationship with a 17-year-old girl who was once his student.

While continuing to profess his love for the girl, Timothy Hammond, 34, of the 200 block of South Cedar Street, Spring City, was sentenced in Montgomery County Court to 47 days to 23 months in the county prison.

Judge Thomas P. Rogers also ordered Hammond to complete four years of probation.

Rogers said Hammond is not eligible for the work-release program during his incarceration.

During a two-day, non-jury trial in June, Rogers convicted Hammond of two misdemeanor counts of corruption of a minor but acquitted Hammond of a more serious felony charge of endangering the welfare of a child in connection with incidents that occurred with the girl between September 2007 and August 2008 while he was a teacher at the Renaissance Academy.

With the verdict, the judge determined that Hammond tended to corrupt the morals of the girl when he had an intimate relationship with her but that his conduct did not place the girl in danger.

Assistant District Attorney James Zoll argued that Hammond’s conduct warranted a prison sentence. Defense lawyer Joseph J. Hylan argued for a probationary sentence.

The girl was not in the courtroom for the sentencing hearing, but her parents were present. The conviction means Hammond will never be permitted to be a teacher again.

During the trial, Hammond, saying he was “overwhelmed by love,” testified he still loves the girl and plans to marry her. Hammond claimed he realized that he could lose his job or be arrested for having an intimate, romantic relationship with his former student but “naively” believed that once people realized that he and the girl were in love that he would not be fired or arrested.

During her testimony, the girl, sometimes tearful, frankly admitted she loved her former teacher and still held out hope that they could marry.

Assistant District Attorney Samantha Cauffman argued the onetime literature teacher and his student were not in the world of “Romeo and Juliet.” Cauffman argued the girl wasn’t allowed to develop as a normal teenager with her peers and that the girl and Hammond were not on the same emotional or intellectual level.

An investigation of Hammond began on Aug. 30, 2008, when East Norriton police discovered Hammond and the girl in the back seat of Hammond’s Nissan Maxima on a secluded parking lot at 3:15 a.m.

The Renaissance Academy is a public charter school that opened in 2001. The school serves about 880 students in grades K-12.

School officials said Hammond began with the school in 2005 and was terminated after the allegations came to light.

USA vs El Salvador- Match Report

Tonight’s CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying match between the USA and El Salvador was a classic example of a regional power struggling to secure a place against a regional spoiler.  The most dangerous thing about El Salvador for the US before tonight’s match was the fact that they had absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

El Salvador played the role of spoiler splendidly throughout most of the first half.  The USA dominated possession and pressured a lot in the offensive third, but they could not break down the visitors’ defense.  El Salvador did a great job of playing stubborn defense and creating counterattacks, and the makeshift US center defense almost gave the visitors the lead on a few occasions.

El Slavador’s patience paid off in the 32nd minute, after a dismally misplaced Jonathan Bornstien pass found its way to the center and ended up in the American net after a great header by Cristian Castillo.  This goal to me is what ruined the chance for El Salvador, because after that they played like a team that did have something to lose, a victory.

Nine minutes later Clint Dempsey placed a great header into the net off a Landon Donovan free kick.  The best part of the play for me was that Dempsey was the only American that was actually onside.

Jozy Altidore gave the US the lead for good in the 45th minute with a brilliant header off a Donovan cross.  It was very nice to see the US score goals on good soccer plays.

At halftime, El Salvadoran manager Carlos de los Cobos had several words for the head referee.  In all fairness there were several calls each way that were not made.  The official was definitely not good in the first half, but he was mostly fair, which is the more important of the two.

In the second half, the US looked much improved, although it did not produce any more goals.  Two goals should have come though.  In the 58th minute the USA had a terrific build up play that resulted in a perfect pass to Jozy Altidore, who put the ball coolly into the back of the net.  The goal was disallowed however, and I could not hear the announcers where I watched the game, but it had to be either offside or a push against Jozy; either way, it was a terrible call.  Up until then the ref had been letting the players play a physical game, but I didn’t even see any contact much less a push on that play.

In the 71st minute Charlie Davies was fouled from behind in the box, and no penalty was given.  Now, the defender was playing the run perfectly in the box, and then another defender came flying in from the midfield and clipped Davies, who was then taken off.  Now like I said, the ref had been calling the game loose, and without the second defender there is no penalty, and Charlie Davies had a similar looking injury against Mexico last month, but contact from behind like that must be called.

While the US ended up outplaying El Salvador by a large stretch, all credit to the visitors for playing until the last whistle.  On a few occasions it appeared as though the game might be tied, but the US defense held firm (enough).

I still must say that I don’t know why Kyle Beckerman continues to be a first choice sub, and that he sees the pitch at all.  He is a good player in MLS, but when he takes the field for the US team he always looks lost and awkward and he makes some strange decisions.  However, he at least does not make bad mistakes, so he is at least not a liability.

With 13 points the USA is in good shape for qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.  With a win against Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday, the US will be almost assured a spot, depending other results.  However this is the most competitive qualifying round in many years, so more points will be necessary than usual.

Come back tomorrow for a rundown of how Madristas fared in their international matches.

Climate change - How India is falling for propaganda

I have been surprised by the number of reasonable Indians who have come to accept the proposition, advanced by equally reasonable but perhaps nationalistically-motivated Americans, that the acceptance of internationally-mandated restrictions on carbon emissions by India is in its own national interest. Some have even come to argue that India should actively seek a climate change treaty at the Copenhagen conference in December 2009.

If the big and largely rich emitters of today were to take mitigation in the immediate future seriously, they could achieve emission cuts commensurate with the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) without denying the poor in India (and Africa) the prospects of a humane existence. With abject poverty eliminated and electricity and water provided to all, India could join the mitigation effort by 2040. (via India and climate change talks).

What if

The entire global warming debate is just a facade to keep up demand for oil from India and China. The opposition to coal fired power plants is to stop India and China from reducing the growth in oil consumption.

After all practically all of British GDP today is declining North Sea oil and British Petroleum. Apart from Chinese money, the other source of liquidity, which keeps the US afloat is petro-dollars. And, remember, US future is so closely linked to Arctic oil. If India and China were to reduce their reliance on oil, leading to a price collapse, the biggest losers will be the Anglo Saxon bloc.

Makes one think!

Acquisitive Indian companies making US nervous?

Three things…

First, many of the regulatory bodies are actually a US-Euro Club – to fool the world, with token actions and steps to demonstrate inclusion and fairness of the developing world.

And second, these token actions divert the attention of the developing world. For instance, World Bank list of banned entities were significantly, from two sectors - Software and Pharma. These are the two sectors where the US still has a lead – and the Indians are its biggest challengers. Generic pharma firms from Indiahave become world beaters - and the Indian software companies have built up US$50 billion a year business, in less than 10 years. These 50 billion dollars have come out of US pockets.

India's pharma exports

At least, the actions against Wipro and Nestor Pharma were pathetic excuses to ban a business – and no third party arbiter will uphold these actions.

Third, on January 9, Standard & Poor’s announced that Greece, Spain and Ireland were on review for a possible downgrade, indicating that a Euro-zone country could default. The cost of the US bailout is likely to exceed US$3 trillion. Current US budget deficit is likely to break all records and estimates.

Not so long ago …

In 1999, an employee of an auto-components manufacturer, Autolite, was arrested in France for trademarks and copyright infringement – based on a complaint by the car manufacturer PSA Puegeot Citroen. The French police, on similar complaints, arrested two other nationals, a Belgian and a Taiwanese woman also.

The Belgian was of course granted bail – and the Indian and the Taiwanese were denied bail - ‘The lawyers representing the Indian businessman offerred to deposit his passport and the sum of 100,000 French Francs claimed by Peugeot in the custody of the court as bailbond, pending the trial of the case on November 12′.

French court procedures took nearly 1 month and the Indian executive was finally granted bail after being in prison for 1 month. After two years of appeals and expensive litigation, the complaint was found to be without any merit – and dismissed.

More recently …

A shipment of medicines destined for Brazil, from India, was detained at Rotterdam. The Dutch Customs used a complaint from a local Dutch company, to detain this shipment, based on local patent laws. After a few months of ‘negotiations’, the shipment was sent back to India. An expert writes, how

‘EU is doing is using Council Regulation (EC) No. 1383/2003 to impound drugs that are suspected of violating patents registered in member-countries even if these are simply in transit. The regulations permit customs to hold these goods for a minimum of 10 working days while informing the patent holder of the seizure. The patent holder then applies to a civil court to initiate legal proceedings in order to prove that infringement has taken place.’

Whats the Quicktake

These actions seem like offensive actions from the EU and the US – to undermine their competitors and to bolster Euro-US businesses. It makes me doubt the Satyam saga. To carry the conspiracy theory thread forward, was there a Merrill Lynch-Ramlinga Raju ‘deal’?

Modern day protectionism, huh?

This also furthers the importance of having non-Western bodies, which are sponsored by the Third World, which will regulate and govern international laws. To depend on the West, is to further dig the hole that the Third World finds itself in.

Japan Takes Diplomatic Lead

Grey Diplomat?

A Peter Popham article in the UK Independent reports that the wife of newly elected Japanese Prime Minister, Yukio Hatoyama, claims she was abducted by aliens about twenty years ago. It seems that his wife, Miyuki Hatoyama, was taken to Venus following the abduction. Must have been a dismal visit as my understanding is that Venus is not the ideal vacationing spot for humans from the planet Earth. I was disappointed with the article in that the reporter either failed his investigative journalism or simply neglected to report the whole story. Nowhere in the article did I read which alien species abducted her. Was it the Greys? Was it the Reptoids? Maybe it was some energy type being? Or was it a yet unannounced intergalactic non-humanoid species? Was she probed or maybe harvested for her eggs? Did she get one of those electronic tags  implanted inside her like Scully in the X-Files? What role did the UN have in her abduction? Was there some UN conpiracy to hide her abduction? Was Bill Clinton involved in any part of brokering her release? Did Bill Clinton have sex with her or the aliens after securing her release? Does Hillary know that Bill had sex with her and the aliens? Did she at least get flying miles and/or credits usable at hotels and motels across the known universe?  Hey – Inquiring minds wanna know! It did manage to report she also knew Tom Cruise in a previous life. I wonder if he jumped on a couch for her. Once again the reporter failed to give all the facts. Still it has to make the Obamas jealous to know that the US was one-upped by Japan because now Japan probably has the inside edge and will become the leading force in the race for Intergalactic Diplomatic Exchanges.  Shucky Darn.
